  • This book is absolutely humor packed all kinds of humor, too tongue and cheek, sarcasm, slap stick, you name it I suggest everyone read this but especially those with a bad case of depression.

  • My Dad introduced us to these years ago He reads them out loud to us on vacation, and they are HILARIOUS Thank you Patrick F McManus, for adding LOTS of laughter to our family vacations

  • A collection of hilarious stories by outdoor humorist Patrick McManus The author has published a whole series of such stories, many of which are based loosely on his experiences growing up in Sandpoint, Idaho McManus is a former columnist for Field Stream and Outdoor Life magazines What is not well known is that he is also a former professor of English at Eastern Washington University His homespun style in these books might obscure the fact that only a master craftsman of the English language ca [...]

  • I really like Patrick McManus s books as well because they are short stories, but so funny The way he looks at things dealing with outdoor sports is just great Often from a kids perspective which I love.

  • Could not help but laugh when I read this book, unfortunately I was in the emergency room waiting area when I did Very funny book.

  • Patrick McManus is a contributor to Field and Stream and Outdoor Life magazines in addition to several other things as well, but these are the most pertinent to give you an idea of the sort of things covered in this book This would normally be of zero interest to me, but it was chosen for one of my book clubs here at home, so there you have it I m so glad it was chosen it was an absolute delight to listen to this book I found myself laughing out loud at his tongue in cheek humor, his sarcasm, hi [...]

  • Fine collection of humorous stories from a gifted writer If you re not an outdoorsman, you probably won t appreciate the subject matter, but if you are, then these short essays should make you laugh even if some of the material is from a bygone era I was very impressed by McManus silly and absurd turns of phrases I can t say he influenced any contemporary humorous fiction writers, but his style precedes the best of today s comic authors.

  • Some parts of this had me struggling not to laugh out loud on a crowded Chinese metro Other parts never took off, maybe because they were so obviously fictional, or because I don t have much interest in fishing I particularly liked the episodes he set in his childhood, especially the Retch Sweeney ones, but the exercise regime was a hoot, as well In any case, it was an easy and enjoyable read.

  • Fantastic, witty, humorous, and nostalgic If you re any type of outdoors person, you ll enjoy reading this book around the campfire or whenever you need a good chuckle.

  • This book was an absolute hoot Would Highly recommend it as it made me LMAO.I will be rereading this the once as well.

  • Second in the set of four by Mr McManus, retired outdoor humor writer This is very consistent with the previous Real Ponies don t go Oink , in that the protagonist is a not very good outdoorsman with equally not very good pals Rancid Crabtree, Crazy Muldoon and barely tolerated by long suffering wife Bun So a sampling After expounding on the concept of cabin fever as experienced by the narrator and his family when he was a kid, he goes one better by describing Two Man Tent Fever, in which he and [...]

  • 20 years ago, my brothers and I each got one of these novels from my uncle in Montana Last night, I read a few chapters from one of them before going to bed I ve lost copies, sent some to my brother in Afghanistan, and replaced them with new copies and some from the library book sale.Patrick McManus, while keeping things or less PG rated, tells stories from his childhood that I can say are entertaining for children and adults alike While his writing and humor can be a little campy, his recounts [...]

  • Pat McManus stories, read to me around the campfire during our yearly camping trip near Estacada, Oregon, almost always made me wet my pants laughing Which is no fun while you re camping since we did REAL camping, with no showers, just the river that was way too cold to bathe in In this particular McManus collection, The Mountain Car is my favorite it chronicles Pat and his best friend, who purchase a beat up car, which they love so much, they name after their favorite teacher, Mrs Peabody You h [...]

  • Some of my fondest memories surround sharing these stories with my papa We would take turns reading and giggling ourselves teary eyed until the wee hours of the morning Now that he is gone, these stories and all the others in the series help remind me of what a blessing he was in my life These are books of short stories essays about the outdoors I am neither a hunter or a fisherman, but I found these stories absolutely hilarious They are even better when shared Do yourself a favor and read one

  • This is not my kind of book My husband and children recommended it to me, and I needed a book by an author from Idaho for my library challenge This just wasn t a genre that pulls me in It was hard for my to get into the stories, or care about the humor I did relate to his wife and her stories made me laugh That being said, my husband and children have worn out all of our copies of his books, as well as the library s copies They love them.

  • Overall this book was interesting but at some parts I would get bored The book has no main story line It s just made up of a bunch of random stories of people s life s living in the country I honestly did not really enjoy this book At some points it was interesting but at others I was thinking about picking up another book I would not really recommend this book to anyone who wants to read it.

  • This collection of short stories provided a pleasant change of pace from my usual genre picks NOT being a fisherman or hunter , there were parts that I needed to reread or think over before moving on HOWEVER, the bottom line was verbally exquisite providing a light hearted study of escapades relationships in an outdoor setting I found myself chuckling my way through the entire collection

  • See my review of A fine and Pleasant Misery for a comprehensive view of my feelings on Patrick McManus Suffice it to say, I ve had this book in my purse to read in doctor s office waiting rooms However, I ll have to remove it because I laughed out loud so hard in the last waiting room that I m not sure I can show my face in there again Well, at least it was a pleasant wait.

  • Oh man, this brings back memories My favorite elementary school teacher used to read this book to us while we waited for the bus at the end of the day _ He would laugh until he cried, while we stood riveted at our desks, waiting for him to be able to speak again so we could hear the punch line.

  • Been several years since I have read this book or other McManus book Forgot how good they were and how much I enjoyed Pat McManus s books are a must read for any outdoors person or anyone in need of a good laugh Unfortunately, I can relate to a lot of these stories especially The Big Match.

  • I ve long been a fan of Pat McManus, and not just because he s a fellow Idahoan. But I ll caution you, if this is your FIRST Pat McManus book, don t be disappointed His other books are better But you get a good introduction to his style and to the characters he creates out of those he knew in childhood.

  • Never Sniff a Gift Fish by Patrick McManus Holt Paperbacks 1984 818 This is a collection of not funny in the slightest essays on hunting, fishing, and camping It cannot possibly be that someone paid Patrick McManus to produce this drivel These are seriously unfunny essays DNF My rating 2 10, finished 2000.

  • overall this was a really funny book it did an excellent job of keeping my attention and i hate reading so that is a pretty big accomplishment it was of an outdoors type of book it talked about fishing and hunting trucks and so on I recommend this book to some one who enjoys the outdoors and sarcastic books i was laughing through out the book.

  • I love Patrick McManus s books They are laugh out loud funny I guess because I love the outdoors and I always went exploring as a kid I think his stories are just so funny These stories are great for the car because they are all short stories Of course with all of his books some stories are better than others but definitely a must read for outdoor enthusiasts.

  • mcmanus is hilarious nothing wrong w laughter and you ll laugh lots reading the stories in his collections first appearing in a major major major major magazinentists the world over have discovered that by having a copy, even old copies, in their waiting rooms, the customers forget where they re at and come back when scheduled good reads, all

  • When I was about 12, Patrick McManus filled the role that Terry Pratchett would fill later His outdoor humor is easy to relate to and gently satrical They might rate stars if I reread them When I catch up on the classics and all the satire ever produced, I ll probably revisit them to see how I feel about them as an adult.

  • I enjoyed the characters, and their world and hope I get the chance to read the story again and or to read within the series. My Rating System couldn t finish, wouldn t recommend, would recommend, would read again, have read again.

  • I was expecting a story but each chapter is another short story Some of them had me laughing pretty hard and others at least made me grin Fast read and entertaining Not my favorite type of book, it is for a bathroom reader in my mind.
